Authorities plan to interview Tyson this week

Associated Press

BIG BEAR CITY, Calif. -- Investigators hope to interview Mike Tyson this week about a woman's claim that the former heavyweight champion sexually assaulted her at a rental home.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers said Sunday that the interview had not yet been scheduled.

"Investigators will get in touch with him," she said.

A woman contacted the sheriff's department Tuesday and alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Tyson on July 16 at a Big Bear City home he rents during training. Details were not disclosed.

The woman was examined at a hospital afterward, but those findings also weren't disclosed, sheriff's spokesman Chip Patterson said.

Sheriffs officials said Friday they had not determined whether there was criminal wrongdoing, and Beavers said Sunday she had no new information on the case or the woman's condition.

Tyson attorney Darrow Soll issued a statement from his Phoenix office Sunday again denying the allegation.

"It is merely an allegation and we feel it is without merit," Soll said. "We are hopeful that the authorities will conduct a thorough and complete investigation, which we fully expect will clear Mr. Tyson of any wrongdoing."

The statement said Tyson was training for a scheduled September fight. The 35-year-old boxer has moved to Phoenix from the Big Bear area, 70 miles east of Los Angeles.

Tyson was quoted by the New York Post as saying: "I'm not aware of any allegations."

Shelly Finkel, Tyson's New York adviser, said, "From what I understand, in the end, Mike will be shown to be innocent."

Earlier this month, Tyson apologized to a Big Bear Lake store owner for walking out of the shop with $25 worth of candy. The store owner reported what happened to the Sheriff's Department, but it later was determined to be a misunderstanding, according to sheriff's officials.

Tyson served more than three years in an Indiana prison after being convicted in 1992 of rape and other charges. He has repeatedly fought abuse claims from women, including his first wife, actress Robin Givens.
