Pringle gave Montreal (1-0) a 7-0 lead with a one-yard plunge 5 1/2 minutes into the game before he scampered in from 14 yards out late in the first half for a 15-13 advantage, one the Alouettes did not relinquish. Pringle, who finished second in the pass-happy Canadian Football League with 14 TDs last year, rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries. Calvillo, who completed 20-of-28 passes without an interception, helped put away the game with his TD passes in the second half. He found Jock Climie from two yards out early in the third quarter before his 10-yard strike to Bruno Heppell gave Montreal a 35-19 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining. Montreal, which won the Eastern Division last year with a 12-6 record, outgained Winnipeg 534-291 while producing four sacks. Kerwin Bell was 9-for-14 for 199 yards and an interception for Winnipeg (0-1), which finished last in the East with a 6-12 mark in 1999. George Jones rushed for 153 yards on 12 carries, including a 98-yard TD run on the final play of the first quarter that cut the deficit to 8-7.
