Salzman stays afloat in Log Roll
By Catherine DiBenedetto
Field & Stream Magazine — July 10, 2005

CELEBRATION, Fla. — During the practice round, three-time Men's Log Roll gold medal winner JR Salzman and his older sister, 5-time Women's Log Roll gold medal winner Tina Bosworth, took turns spinning each other off the wood.

"We've both had bull's eyes on our back," Bosworth said, "so there's a lot of empathy there." Tina may have had her gold medal streak broken at this year's Games, but JR held on to win again in today's competition. Throughout the three rounds of contest, Bosworth coached her brother from the dock until he was the last man standing.

26-year-old Salzman, also a five-time world champion, advanced through the semifinals by beating timber sport legend, 47-year-old Fred Scheer in a close battle.

After reaching the one-minute time limit on a 15-inch diameter log, they moved to a log one inch smaller in diameter that would spin faster under their weight. After Scheer quickly dunked Salzman, the younger roller spun Scheer backwards twice. To win the best out of three, Salzman took advantage of a risky maneuver by Scheer who tried edging towards the middle for stability, and tossed Scheer one last time.

The final round pitted Salzman against Jamie Fischer. Before the whistle, Fischer got last minute advice from his uncle, Chris Fischer, who he rolled and beat earlier in the quarterfinals. Jamie Fischer is said to be one of the fastest men in the sport. He took Salzman's gold in 2003 and then Salzman won it back in 2004.

This match would follow the same pattern with Fischer taking the first of four total falls between them that left the standings tied 2-2. In the final roll, Salzman caught Fischer off balance on his back step to send him off the log and take home gold.

44-year-old Dan McDonough beat Fred Scheer for the bronze medal. Before the Games, Scheer called McDonough and himself "the two senior statesman of the event."

The results begged the question of whether Scheer, who has yet to place in the Log Roll at the Great Outdoor Games after six years of competition, will come back for another try next summer.

"I've been saying no," he told the crowd, "but it's in my blood. We'll see."
