After splitting the first two holes, Norman and Elkington lost the next six in a row, with three bogeys and a double-bogey. They were 6-over after eight holes. Furyk-Sutton (U.S.) def. Allenby-Appleby (International), 1-up
Sutton and Furyk were steady but unspectacular, picking up only two birdies over 18 holes. Allenby and Appleby also picked up a pair of birdies as neither team could capitalize. In particular, the Americans let several birdie opportunities slip away after the turn.

Cink-Triplett (U.S.) def. Goosen-Weir (International), 3&2
Easily the best golf of the day by any group, and it came from four Presidents Cup rookies. Cink and Triplett never trailed and closed the match out when Triplett holed a 40-foot birdie put at the par-3 16th. It was the fourth birdie in five holes for the U.S. team, which made seven birdies over 16 holes. Weir and Goosen didn't make a birdie after the seventh hole. Cink hit numerous irons close, and Triplett capitalized on almost all of them.

Begay-Woods (U.S.) def. Els-Singh (International), 1-up
The spotlight match of the day was probably the sloppiest. Woods and Begay birdied two holes on the front and were 3-up through 10, but they lost the next three holes. The 16th hole was key after Woods air mailed the green at the par-3. Begay chipped back, using a slope at the back of the green, leaving the ball 20 feet from the cup. And Woods holed it, pumping his fist as he walked to the cup. Singh's putter was shaky all day, including on No. 17 when he missed a 10-footer for birdied that would have evened the match.

Duval-Love (U.S.) def. Franco-Price (International), 1-up
Neither team grabbed control of the match until late in the round, with both teams facing long two-putts rather than birdie chances most of the day. Duval grabbed the match with birdie putts on Nos. 14 and 15. Duval played most of the match without his 7-iron, which he broke on the third hole trying to hook a ball around some trees.
