Chip shots: Has won four times on PGA Tour in past 15 months, but has rarely contended otherwise. Has just two other top-10 finishes in two years. Putts both right-handed and left-handed, depending on the break. Played college golf with Tiger Woods, which would make them a natural pairing.

Chip shots: One of the steadiest players on the PGA Tour, but has just two wins since winning rookie of year in 1997. Won at Harbour Town earlier this year and had some good majors. Gave Tiger Woods a good run in third round of 1999 WGC Match Play. Played college golf with David Duval, so could be paired with him.

Chip shots: Starting to look like the David Duval of old after taking off two months to rest a bad back. Won Buick Challenge in first tournament back for 12th career win, and contended at Kingsmill. Not a big fan of match play or team competition, although 1999 Ryder Cup may have changed his mind.

Chip shots: One of the most consistent ball-strikers and putters on the PGA Tour, although he has just five wins -- three of them at Las Vegas. Hasn't performed very well in either Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup, going a combined 5-9 in three competitions.

Chip shots: Missed the 1998 Presidents Cup, his only absence from team competition since 1994. Played great at the start of the season, winning in Phoenix and contending often, but has been slowed by a knee injury. The only American to play the Dunhill Cup as a warmup.

Chip shots: Joins Phil Mickelson as the only four-time member of the Presidents Cup, and shares U.S. lead for wins with Fred Couples at 8. A great ball-striker, long off the tee but sometimes can't get the big putt to drop. Hasn't won in more than 30 months on PGA Tour.

Chip shots: One of two captain's picks after narrowly missing out of top 10. Along with Brad Faxon, considered best putters in the game, hense his nickname "Boss of the Moss." One of the shortest hitters in the game, but he compensates with short game. Finished in top 10 in three majors this year.

Chip shots: Hard to believe he is a Presidents Cup rookie, but he was forced to pull out of 1998 competition because of a death in the family. With the best player on the 1999 Ryder Cup team and has become a force on PGA Tour, winning twice this year, including wire-to-wire win at Players Championship.

Chip shots: Journeyman player broke through in 2000 with first win at Riviera. It wasn't a fluke, since he also has a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and two 10th-place finishes this year. Solid in every aspect of the game and plays conservative game. Has never been in match play as a professional.

Chip shots: The undisputed best player in the world in the midst of perhaps the best season ever in golf. Won three majors and has nine wins in 17 starts this season, including current streak of three. Great match-play player, with three U.S. Amateur titles. Just a combined 4-5-1 in '98 Presidents Cup and '99 Ryder Cup.
