WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Bruce Fleisher made a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the last hole Saturday for a share of the lead in the AT&T Canada Senior Open.
Fleisher, the Senior PGA Tour's top money winner this season with just over $1.8 million, is tied with Tom Jenkins at 10-under 206 through 54 holes at St. Charles Golf and Country Club.
Bruce Fleisher found his way out of the woods Saturday en route to a 68 and share of the third-round lead.
"It surprised the heck out of me when it went in," said Fleisher, referring to the long putt on the par-5 18th that capped off a round of 4-under 68. "I got it rolling pretty good. I'm just glad it hit the center of the hole."
On Friday, Fleisher had a disastrous final hole, stumbling in with a double-bogey. So instead of being tied with the leaders, he started the third round two shots back at 6 under.
Fleisher, seeking his fifth victory of the year, felt fortunate to be in front.
"I'm not that comfortable with this golf course, especially when it's this windy," Fleisher said. "I think my experience and a bit of patience helped me through it."
Jenkins, the second-round leader at 8 under, shot a 70.
"I don't feel like I am hitting the ball all that well, but I'm putting pretty good," he said. "When the wind blows like this, you're forced to start playing some very different shots."
Fleisher and Jenkins will be joined in the final threesome by Doug Tewell, whose 68 left him alone in third at 205. Ed Dougherty
is at 204 after a solid 69.
Jack Nicklaus went on a bit of a birdie run on the back nine to excite the huge crowd that followed him. He birdied the 12th, 14th and 15th holes to move to 6 under, but bogeyed the par-4 16th when his tee shot took a bad hop. He shot a 70 for a 5-under 211 total.
"I moved up a bit, but I'll need to be in the mid-60s to win," Nicklaus said. "At least I'm in contention. I haven't had a chance to win a golf tournament in a long time, so that feels nice."
