Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam resume their battle for women's golf supremacy when the JAL Big Apple Classic begins Thursday at Wykagyl Country Club.

With Webb taking last week off, Sorenstam tied her rival for the tour lead with her fourth victory, pulling out a playoff win at the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic.

It was the 22nd career victory for Sorenstam, two more than Webb, and moved her within $100,000 of Webb for the top spot on the money list.

After claiming her fourth title of the year at the Nabisco Championship in late March, Webb has gone winless despite being in contention in almost every tournament she has played since. She has 10 top-10 finishes in 11 events and is coming off a ninth-place finish at the LPGA Championship three weeks ago.

Juli Inkster, the 1992 champion, will be competing in her final event before defending the U.S. Women's Open title next week at the Merit Club outside Chicago.

Inkster captured her sixth major title at the LPGA Championship and is third on the money list with $689,028. She was third in this event last year.

Defending champion Sherri Steinhauer will seek her first title of the year. She outlasted Lorie Kane by sinking a 35-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole, then went on to win the Women's British Open one month later for her fifth career victory.

This season, Steinhauer has nine top-10 finishes in 19 events, including third at the Evian Masters. She is eighth on the money list with $393,329.

Former champions in this week's field include two-time winner Betsy King (1990-91), Beth Daniel (1994), Hiromi Kobayashi (1993) and Michele Redman (1997).
