Many of the top players will not be in the field when the Cadillac NFL Golf Classic begins Friday in New Jersey.

Defending champion Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher and Dana Quigley are playing, but Doug Tewell, Larry Nelson, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and Gil Morgan are among those taking the week off.

Doyle won his third of four titles as a rookie in this event last year. Doyle, who battled back spasms throughout the tournament, held off Joe Inman in a four-hole playoff after the two finished with at 12-under 204.

It was the third consecutive year the event was settled in sudden death. In 1998, Bob Dickson defeated Nelson and Jim Colbert in a three-way playoff. One year earlier, Bruce Crampton beat Hugh Baiocchi.

Although the tournament lacks the Senior Tour's leading money winners, it does have some legends. Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Gary Player and Tom Watson are in the field.

Watson is returning to the Senior Tour after making the cut last week at the U.S. Open. He is seeking his first win of the season after several close calls.

Fleisher is seeking his tour-leading fourth title of the season and first since winning the Home Depot Invitational in a playoff early last month. He is second to Nelson on the money list.

Quigley is fourth in earnings and is looking to add to his TD Waterhouse Championship. He has played in 109 consecutive events he has been eligible to play and is only one of four to compete in all 19 Senior tournaments this year.

The 78-player field will attack one of the most challenging courses on the tour. Upper Montclair Country Club features narrow fairways and two tough closing holes -- the 215-yard, par-3 17th and 590-yard, par-5 18th.

In addition to the Seniors, NFL players compete in a 72-hole charity tournament. Al Del Greco, a kicker with the Tennessee Titans, is the defending champion and one of 56 NFL players in this year's field.
