Karrie Webb, Juli Inkster or one of the other 142 players?

That's the question when it comes to LPGA majors these days, only the 142 others can be eliminated. Webb and Inkster have combined to win the last six majors, with Webb the hottest of the pair. Webb entered last year's du Maurier Classic with 15 career victories and no majors. She now has 21 wins and three majors.

Webb won last year's event by two shots over Laura Davies, shooting consecutive 66s on the weekend to finish at 11-under 277 at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary. She added the Nabisco Championship and U.S. Women's Open this year, giving her a shot at three majors in one season.

That hasn't been accomplished since Pat Bradley pulled it off in 1986.

Webb has won five times in 2000, but she'll have plenty of competition at the final du Maurier Classic. Inkster, winner of the LPGA Championship, four-time winner Annika Sorenstam and two-time winners Betsy King and Davies are among those taking aim at Webb.

Other winners from 2000 events in the field include Dorothy Delasin, Sophie Gustafson, Pat Hurst, Lorie Kane, Meg Mallon, Nancy Scranton and Charlotta Sorenstam. Kane, who broke through with her first win last week after nine runnerup finishes, is hoping to ride the momentum to success in her native Canada.

The only winner from 2000 not in the field is rookie Grace Park.

But winning in the past isn't necessarily important at the du Maurier. In recent years, a number of players have made the major their first tournament victory. Tammie Green (1989), Cathy Johnston (1990), Nancy Scranton (1991), Sherri Steinhauer (1992) and Jenny Lidback (1995) all pulled off the trick.

A victory for Webb not only would add to her impressive victory total, but she is closing in on her own standard for earnings in one season. A first- or second-place finish this week would give the earnings record to Webb, who enters the week with slightly more than $1.5 million to date this season.

Royal Ottawa Golf Club is being used for the first time for the du Maurier, which rotates throughout Canadian courses. It is a challenging layout, particularly the odd back nine which begins with a short par-4 and back-to-back par-3s. Then the big hitters grab the advantage coming in, with a pair of par-5s and four challenging par-4s.

Of particular note is the finishing hole, a monster par-5 at 552 yards which nobody in the field will be reaching in two.

Although this is the final major of the year, there are still a dozen more tournaments on the schedule. Next week, the LPGA crosses the pond for the Women's British Open, a tournament likely to replace the du Maurier as a major in the future. The next big event comes the first week of October, when the Solheim Cup is contested.
