In the midst of the best start of her career, Karrie Webb hopes to continue her dominant play when the Firstar LPGA Classic begins Friday at the Country Club of the North.

Last year's LPGA Tour Player of the Year, Webb has picked up right where she left off in 1999, with four titles in her first seven LPGA Tour events, finishing no worse than sixth.

"I think after last year, I knew it was going to be hard to live up to my performance and have an even better year," Webb said. "I was just sort of looking forward to seeing some good golf. But so far, things have been even better."

In addition to her success on the LPGA Tour this season, Webb has claimed victories at tournaments in Australia and Japan.

After setting an LPGA Tour record with 16 consecutive top-10 finishes over 1998-99, Webb has rattled off 10 straight, dating to the final three events of last season. She tied for sixth at last week's Electrolux USA Championship.

Rosie Jones returns to defend the hard-earned title she won last year.

Jones defeated Jan Stephenson and Becky Iverson on the fourth playoff hole for her 10th career LPGA Tour victory. After Stephenson was eliminated on the first extra hole, Jones and Iverson parred the second and third before Jones made a 4-footer for par and Iverson bogeyed the fourth extra hole.

"Last year, I remember I was 2-over through the first nine holes and just trying to make a plan to make the cut," said Jones, 40. "By the time there were nine holes left in the tournament, I was making a plan to win. That's a big change of plans."

After missing the cut in her first two starts this season, Jones has finished in the top 15 twice in her last six, including a tie for eighth at the Nabisco Championship, the first major of the season.

Annika Sorenstam and Charlotta Sorenstam, each of whom have one victory this season, as well as two-time winner Laura Davies, also will be contending for the $97,500 first prize.

Pat Hurst, who posted a wire-to-wire victory last week, is not entered.
