The Senior Tour has hit the final stage of the 2000 season, but most of the top players are taking the week off and bypassing the Foremost Insurance Championship.

Just three of the top-10 money winners this season are in the field at Egypt Valley Country Club, and just six of the 14 past champions of the tournament will tee it up.

Leading the way is Larry Nelson, who won for the third time this season last week at the FleetBoston Classic with a four-shot victory. Another strong performance this week could move him past Hale Irwin and into second place on the season money list.

Irwin and current leader Bruce Fleisher are among those skipping this event. Nelson's toughest competition could come from ironman Dana Quigley, who is fourth on the money list and never misses a start, or Allen Doyle, who is seventh on the money list.

Defending champion Christy O'Connor Jr. is in the field, looking to recapture some of the magic from his rookie season. The two-time winner from 1999 stands just 52nd on this year's money list and needs a strong push at the end of the season to reach the season-ending Tour Championship.

That's true for several players in the field, who are chasing Lee Trevino for the 31st and final spot in that tournament, although there are still nine regular-season events left to jockey for position.

Trevino, Gary Player and Lanny Wadkins are the three biggest attractions at Egypt Valley. Trevino and Wadkins both have one win this year, while Player is still searching for a victory in his sixth consecutive decade as a professional.

This is the first of three consecutive weeks in the Midwest for the Seniors, who head to Indianapolis next week for the Comfort Classic, then on to Mason, Ohio for the Kroger Senior Classic, with Gil Morgan the defending champion at both events.
