Jackie Gallagher-Smith hopes to turn her season around at the site of her only win when the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic begins Friday at the Avalon Lakes Golf Club.

Gallagher-Smith recorded a wire-to-wire, three-shot victory last year over Marnie McGuire. She fired a final-round 7-under 65 en route to a tournament-record 17-under 199.

This season has been a struggle for Gallagher-Smith, who has missed the cut in half of her first 16 starts.

But after three straight consistent outings, Gallagher-Smith has seen her confidence rise. After a tie for 13th at the ShopRite Classic, Gallagher-Smith posted her best finish of the season at the JAL Big Apple Classic two weeks ago, a tie for fourth. She is coming off a tie for 21st at last week's U.S. Women's Open.

Gallagher-Smith is 50th on tthe money list with $126,774.

After claiming her second major championship of the year last week and qualifying for the Hall of Fame, Karrie Webb is taking the week off, as are other top players Annika Sorenstam and Juli Inkster.

Janice Moodie, currently ninth on the money list with $417,195, is the highest season money winner in the field.

Former champions in the field include 1998 winner Se Ri Pak; two-time champions Tammie Green (1994, 1997) and Michelle McGann (1995-96); and Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez (1993).

The LPGA moves to St. Louis next week for the Michelob Light Classic before the final major of the season, the du Maurier Classic. Webb and Inkster will attempt to continue their major streak at Royal Ottawa Golf Club, with both combining to win the last six majors on tour.
