Bruce Fleisher is back on familiar turf this week with an opportunity to regain the top spot for Senior Tour bragging rights.

Fleisher is the defending champion of the Long Island Classic, and another strong performance this week could return him to No. 1 on the season money list. Fleisher currently trails Hale Irwin by about $35,000, but Irwin is skipping this week's event and leaving the door open for Fleisher.

Irwin isn't the only top player bypassing Long Island. Three other players in the top 10 on the money list are not in New York this week: No. 3 Larry Nelson, No. 7 Doug Tewell and No. 9 Hubert Green.

Fleisher does have plenty of competition this week. Dana Quigley, Gil Morgan, Allen Doyle, Tom Jenkins and Tom Kite are just some of the top players in the field, along with former champions George Archer, Ray Floyd and Lee Trevino.

Archer won this event three consecutive years (1990-1992), while Trevino won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. Morgan is coming off a four-shot win last week at the Instinet Classic, his second victory of the season.

Last year, Fleisher went wire-to-wire for the victory, but it wasn't without some close calls.

Fleisher tied the course record on Friday with a 64, but was nearly disqualified Saturday when he misread the schedule and arrived just moments before he was to tee off. And it didn't get any better on Sunday.

After completing his final round, he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for failing to replace his ball at its original spot at the 18th hole. A spectator informed him of the error prior to signing his scorecard, advice which saved him from disqualification.

The penalty reduced his margin of victory from four strokes to two over Doyle and taught Fleisher a huge lesson.

Next week, the tour heads to Minnesota for the Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic, followed by a trek across the border for the Canada Senior Open.
