It should be nothing but sweet memories this week for Juli Inkster, who returns to the tournament where she made history last season.

Inkster won the LPGA Championship by four shots over Liselotte Neumann to complete a career Grand Slam, joining Louise Suggs, Mickey Wright and Pat Bradley as the only women to accomplish the feat. It came just one month after she won the U.S. Women's Open for the third leg.

And Inkster didn't waver coming in last year. She picked up her historic title by finishing eagle-birdie-birdie during a final-round 67. Inkster played all four rounds in the 60s to finish at 16-under 268, one shot shy of the tournament record set by Betsy King in 1992.

Rosie Jones opened last year's tournament with a 7-under 64, giving her a one-stroke lead over two-time champion Laura Davies. But a 72 on Friday by Jones allowed others back into the tournament, including Inkster, who shared the midway lead with Jones, Neumann, Cristie Kerr and Jenny Lidback.

A 69 on Saturday kept Inkster in a tie with Kerr and Nancy Scranton, before she took control on Sunday.

Inkster became just the second player to win the event with four rounds in the 60s.

Inkster has started the 2000 with some strong performances. She won the Longs Drugs Challenge and has five other finishes in the top three. But Inkster will have plenty of challengers as she tries to defend her title.

Karrie Webb is seeking her fifth win of the season and her third consecutive major championship. She won the du Maurier at the end of 1999, then picked up the first major of 2000 with a runaway at the Nabisco Championship.

Annika Sorenstam has won three times, including a playoff win over Webb last week at the Evian Masters. Davies and King have won twice this season, as well.

Other winners from 2000 in the field include Scranton, Pat Hurst, Sophie Gustafson, Meg Mallon, Grace Park and Charlotta Sorenstam.

Mallon is one player to keep a close eye on. She set the course record with a 63 in last year's third round, and won in Rochester just two weeks ago. She also has a strong record in major championships, including victories at both the LPGA Championship and U.S. Women's Open in 1991.

Se Ri Pak, winner of this event in 1998, is still searching for her first win of the 2000 season. She showed signs of life last week in France with a tie for fifth. The same is true for Dottie Pepper, who tied for third at the Evian Masters.

Webb has the most to gain by winning this week. As the winner of the Nabisco Championship, she is eligible for some big bonus money in majors the rest of the season. Victory in a second major would earn Webb a $250,000 bonus. A third title would garner an additional $1 million, and a sweep of all four would be worth an extra $2.5 million.
