Forgive some of the players at the New Albany Golf Classic if their thoughts are a week down the line this week.

The Solheim Cup is next week in Scotland, and 13 players in the New Albany field will be taking part in the LPGA's version of the Ryder Cup, pitting players from the United States against a European squad in match-play competition.

Nine of the 12 Americans and four of the 12 Europeans will be playing at New Albany, trying to tune their games for the bi-annual competition.

Among that group is Annika Sorenstam, who won the inaugural New Albany Classic last year in a comfortable fashion. Sorenstam shot four rounds in the 60s -- including a 66 on Sunday -- to win by three shots over Mardi Lunn. Nobody three others were closer than 10 shots to Sorenstam.

Sorenstam needs a strong performance at New Albany if she hopes to catch Karrie Webb this season. Despite five victories, Sorenstam trails Webb on the money list, Vare Trophy standings and player of the year points.

Sorenstam does have history on her side this week. In addition to her win last year, Sorenstam has a great history in Ohio, having won her last three starts in the state at New Albany last year, and the Firstar LPGA Classic in Dayton and Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in Toledo this year.

Ohio is also a favorite locale for Meg Mallon and Rosie Jones, two of the Americans headed to Scotland next week. Both women are Ohio State alums and will have the crowd on their sides this week.

History in Ohio is probably the best defense they have against Webb, who is in the field and trying for her seventh win this season. That would match the most wins by a player since Beth Daniel won seven times in 1990.

This is the final full-field tournament of the season for the LPGA Tour, although there are still several events on the schedule. But they include the limited-field Samsung World Championship of Women's Golf and AFLAC Champions, two events in Japan without many of the regular LPGA players, and the Tour Championship, limited to the top 30 on the money list.
