If Se Ri Pak continues along her current path, she will successfully defend her title at the $1.1 million ShopRite Classic, which begins Friday.

Pak is winless this season after capturing four tournaments in 1999, but she has shown steady improvement to rise to 13th on the LPGA money list with $248,269. In her last three tournaments, Pak went from eighth at the Rochester International to fifth at the Evian Masters and to third in last week's LPGA Championship.

An eight-time LPGA champion, Pak won the first of her four 1999 titles here with a 15-under 198, two strokes better than Trish Johnson. Pak also won the Jamie Farr Classic, the World Championship of Golf and the Tour Championship last season.

Pak faces a field that includes eight of the 11 tournament winners from 2000, including Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, who made apar putt on the second playoff hole to defeat Stefania Croce of Italy last week in the LPGA Championship. It was the sixth major title for Inkster, a two-time champion of this event.

Betsy King, like Inkster a two-time champion of this event and a Hall of Famer, is entered, as are Laura Davies, Sophie Gustafson and Charlotta Sorenstam.

Karrie Webb, who last week fell short in her bid to win her third straight major, is not entered. Neither is Annika Sorenstam, who set the tournament record at 196 during her 1998 victory.

The par-71 Seaview Marriott Resort Bay Course measures 6,051 yards, one of the shortest tracks the women will see all season. That becomes obvious after the turn, when three holes in a four-hole stretch are all par-3s.

The course also features some short par-4s, including the 292-yard eighth, 302-yard fifth, 325-yard 15th and 337-yard 17th.

Next week, the tour heads to Ohio for the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, then to New York for the Big Apple Classic before the third major of the year, the U.S. Women's Open at the Merit Club in Libertyville, Ill.
