The last eight months have been a series of near misses for Tom Watson. There was the playoff at the ACE Group Classic in February, another at The Tradition in April and two other top-10 finishes this year through six starts on his Senior PGA Tour schedule.

But the series of narrow misses began last September, when Watson failed to qualify for the TD Waterhouse in his hometown of Kansas City because his 50th birthday came three days too late.

This week, Watson finally gets a chance to play a Senior Tour event in his hometown at the TD Waterhouse Championship, which was moved up from September on the schedule and begins Friday.

"I am under more pressure this week. I enjoy that," Watson said. "I'm looking forward to it. I haven't competed here since 1971."

A Hall of Famer and six-time Player of the Year, Watson is seeking his second Senior Tour victory after winning the Bank One Championship last year in his second event on the circuit.

Watson's chances at winning this week are as good as any, with eight of the 12 winners this season not in the field.

Among those sitting out is Hale Irwin, who broke out of a title drought last week at the Nationwide Championship, where Watson finished in a tie for sixth.

Also skipping the TD Waterhouse are Larry Nelson, Hubert Green, John Jacobs, Tom Kite and George Archer -- six of the top 13 players on the money list. Each has won an event this season.

Bruce Fleisher is here. The reigning Player of the Year has won a three titles and $983,059 this season.

Also entered is defending champion Allen Doyle, who won his fourth title of 1999 here last year by sinking four birdies in his last seven holes to edge Ed Dougherty by two strokes.

Doyle is seventh on the money list this year, having won the Toshiba Senior Classic to go along with five other top-10 finishes in 12 starts.

Dana Quigley, Doug Tewell, Tom Jenkins and Gil Morgan -- who are in the top 10 on the money list -- also are in Kansas City this week.
