Lido Palace beats 'Albert' at his favorite track

NEW YORK -- Lido Palace took on Albert the Great at Albert's favorite track, Belmont Park, and beat him Saturday in the Woodward.

Jockey Jery bailey celebrates his fifth Woodward win.
"We thought Albert the Great was the horse to beat," said winning trainer Bobby Frankel, and Lido Palace did it by passing him with a little more than a sixteenth-of-a-mile remaining for a one-length victory.

It was only Albert the Great's second loss in eight starts at Belmont. It also was Lido Palace's second straight win over Albert as he beat him in the Whitney Handicap on Aug. 4 at Saratoga.

Albert the Great finished a half-length in front of Tiznow, the 2000 Horse of the Year, who was racing for the first time since winning the Santa Anita Handicap on March 3.

Long shot Country Be Gold finished another 8 1/4 lengths back, and Red Bullet, the 2000 Preakness winner, racing for only the second time in a year, finished last.

Jerry Bailey, who rode Lido Palace in the Whitney, chose to ride him again rather than ride Red Bullet.

"Lido Palace ran very strong in the Whitney. It's tough to get off a horse you just won on," said Bailey, who won the Woodward for fifth time in 10 rides and for the fourth time in the last seven years.

Lido Palace paid $7.80, $3.40 and $2.10 and earned $300,000 from a $500,000 purse. Albert the Great, ridden by Jorge Chavez, returned $2.80 and $2.10, while Tiznow, ridden by Chris McCarron, paid $2.10.

The winner covered 1 1-8 miles in 1:47 2-5 under 126 pounds, the same weight carried by the other startser. He carried 115 when he finished second to Albert the Great (123) in Belmont's Suburban Handicap on July and he carried 115 when he beat Albert (124) in the Whitney.

Lido Palace is not nominated to the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 27 at Belmont Park.

"That's a lot of money," Frankel said. "I'll have to talk to the owners (John and Jerome Ammerman) and we'll make a decision. There are a lot of options."

Nick Zito, Albert the Great's trainer, said , "He ran great. We have no excuses."

"He ran his heart out, and I don't think you saw the best of Tiznow," McCarron said of Tiznow, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic winner, whose six-month layoff was due to a vertebrae problem that also led to his retirement.

"There was a little rust," McCarron add. "It's a lot to ask of horse to come back in a race like this."
