Answer Guy responds to your e-mail:
Why does the Masters winner get a Green Jacket?
ESPN The Magazine

John McManigal: Tradition. Glad we cleared that up. Shotaling: To symbolize the enviable position he is in. The big jerk. Rafael Alenda: As a continuing reminder of what winning the Masters is all about. Money. Most pro golfers are just scraping by. James R. Foster: The winner of the Masters gets a green jacket for one very simple reason: He is the master of the greens! Isn't the whole course meant to be green? Now get back in the kitchen and cook dinner! Are you talking to me? Dixon: What is the point of getting a green jacket after winning the biggest tournament in golf? That's what I'd like to know. Maybe it does show that you have won a huge tournament, but a green jacket is just plain ugly! Says you. Green doesn't really go with anything. It would be better if you got a navy jacket or something that you will actually wear. I could use a good sweater. James Marquez: Because it was the cheapest one they could get at the time. Not untrue. The first jackets were made in 1937 by Brooks Uniforms of New York City. And green fabric was very cheap -- can't imagine why. jbianx: They wanted a jacket that nobody in their right mind would own. That's crazy! You see a guy walking down the street wearing a green jacket, you know he won the Masters. Or he's a wino.
