Schilling passes Big Unit for strikeout lead
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) – Curt Schilling had good command, and the strikeouts kept piling up. It was only when he finished that he realized what a slugfest he was in.

Curt Schilling
Curt Schilling's 50 strikeouts is best in the majors, ahead of teammate Randy Johnson's 48.

"I had probably as good of stuff as I've had physically all season," the right-hander said after fanning 12 in a 10-7 victory over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. "I felt fantastic, but every mistake I made got hammered. The offense was huge."

Schilling (3-0) took over the major league strikeout lead, finishing with 50 strikeouts to teammate Randy Johnson's 48 on the season. It was his 53rd career game with double-digit strikeouts and third this year.

But he also gave up 13 hits and seven runs in seven-plus innings in front of 23,097 fans -- the smallest crowd in Bank One Ballpark history.

"I've never seen a guy pitch seven innings, give up 13 hits and strike out 12," Mark Grace said. "It was a very strange outing. I thought he had good stuff, I really did. But that's a young, aggressive team over there, and they're flat-out swinging. When they hit it, they hit it hard."

Manager Bob Brenly thought it was time for a turnabout, especially given considering that Schilling came without two outs of a complete-game win last week but finished with a no-decision.

"Curt has bailed out the offense many time," Brenly said. "When we weren't able to score runs, he's gone out there and put up zeros when we need him to. So I guess that nifty 13-hitter will work."

Schilling, who had two no-decisions since his last victory April 10 over Los Angeles, was pulled after giving up a double to Mike Lowell and a two-run homer to Charles Johnson to lead off the eighth.

Bret Prinz pitched the ninth for his first career save as the Diamondbacks swept a series for the first time this season. They had won the first two games of previous series with St. Louis and Colorado, but weren't able to close those out.

"When it's a kind of rollercoaster-type game, some of those you really want to close the door and win," said Charles Johnson, who had six hits over the last two games. "But it's tough to face a guy like Schilling. You don't score those kind of runs on him very often."

Schilling gave up two other homers -- solo shots by Derrek Lee in the second and Preston Wilson in the fifth.

Jay Bell and Craig Counsell hit solo homers for the Diamondbacks, Reggie Sanders had a two-run double and Damian Miller drove in three runs with a pair of singles.

Marlins rookie Jason Grilli (2-2) was lifted in the fifth when he failed to get four batters out, allowing two singles and hitting Matt Williams to load the bases before Mark Grace hit a run-scoring single to give Arizona a 6-5 lead.

Ricky Bones came in to face Sanders, who doubled just inside the third-base line to score two runs. Miller's two-run single made it 10-5.

"We got hit by the big inning two nights in a row," Florida manager John Boles said. "Jason was missing with his location, and they're good hitters. They hit the pitches that were mistakes."

The Marlins took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Alex Gonzalez and Luis Castillo.

But Arizona never trailed after the fourth, when it scored three runs on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and three singles -- Miller's first RBI, and a two-run hit by Steve Finley.

Game notes
The Diamondbacks scored 28 runs in the series. ... Arizona placed closer Matt Mantei on the 15-day DL before the game and filled his roster spot by purchasing the contract of RHP Erik Sabel from Triple-A Tucson and moving RHP Bobby Witt to the 60-day DL. An MRI exam found a tear of the envelope that encloses nerves in Mantei's right elbow. ... When Grilli hit Williams, it was the 13th time a Diamondback has been hit. Nine were plunked during the six-game homestand.
