Brewers improve to 8-3 at Miller Park
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE – Beating the New York Mets hasn't been easy for the Milwaukee Brewers in their first three seasons in the National League. That may be changing.

Richie Sexson hit a two-run triple in a four-run seventh and Jimmy Haynes survived a tough first inning to lead the Brewers over the Mets 7-2 Wednesday night.

"They used to have our number, and it's good to take a couple of games from them," said Sexson, who had two of Milwaukee's 13 hits. "They've got a World Series-caliber team, and it goes to show that our ballclub is no slouch either."

After hitting three home runs to win the series opener 6-4, the Brewers had nine singles and a pair of sacrifice flies in building a 3-2 lead against Steve Trachsel (0-4).

Sexson's triple in the seventh off reliever Rick White scored Ronnie Belliard, who reached on an error by pitcher Rick White, and Geoff Jenkins, who was walked intentionally.

Another run scored on an error by third baseman Lenny Harris on a grounder by Jeffrey Hammonds. Tyler Houston drove in the fourth run with a single against Dennis Cook.

Sexson hadn't hit the ball out of the infield in his first three at-bats, managing an infield single while striking out twice.

"I still feel the same," said Sexson, who is batting .237. "My swing's not right. Fortunately, I've got the numbers that I do. I just don't feel comfortable, but it'll come around."

The Mets were 10-2 in Milwaukee the last three seasons before losing their first two games in 2001.

"We're in one of those things," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "We've been through this before. We've got to fight our way out of it, and we will."

Haynes (2-2) allowed two runs, eight hits and four walks, surviving a shaky first inning in which he walked three batters with one out. But Benny Agbayani hit into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.

"I got lucky to get the double play and out of that inning," Haynes said. "After that I threw pretty good, I think."

David Weathers allowed one hit in three innings, throwing only 26 pitches for his third save. The Brewers improved their record to 10-10 after losing their first four games.

"I'm sure a lot of people, when we went 0-and-4, said, 'Here we go again.' Fortunately, we can't do that," Weathers said. "There's a lot of work to be done, but I think it says a lot for us to start 0-4 and come back and play good baseball."

Manager Davey Lopes said it's too early to worry about a .500 record.

"It's only 20 games and these guys have battled back," Lopes said. "We've still got some guys that are sputtering a little bit. We've got some key people hurt, but we're going to battle and we feel confident every night that we take the field we're going to win the ballgame."

Trachsel gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings.

Luiz Lopez's sacrifice fly put Milwaukee ahead in the third, and the Brewers made it 3-0 in the fourth on Tyler Houston's RBI grounder and Raul Casanova's sacrifice fly.

Edgardo Alfonzo's solo homer and Jay Payton's RBI single cut it to 3-2 in the fifth. Alfonzo, batting .167 coming into the series, had three hits for the second straight game and raised his average to .230.

"It's frustrating," Payton said. "We know we're capable of playing a lot better. There's no excuses, we just have to start playing better."
