GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) Mike Thurman knew the Milwaukee Brewers hit
five home runs in their previous game. He made sure it didn't
happen again.
| | | Vladimir Guerrero's homer is all the scoring the Expos could muster. |
Thurman allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings as
the Montreal Expos beat the Brewers 6-1 Friday, stopping
Milwaukee's five-game home winning streak.
"I saw some of the highlights and I knew those were all
hittable pitches," Thurman said of the Brewers' 12-8 win over the
Mets on Thursday. "I knew if I threw good pitches, for the most
part, they weren't going to take me deep."
Thurman (2-3), who struck out six and walked two, was backed by
solo homers from Vladimir Guerrero, Orlando Cabrera and Andy Tracy.
"That's always good to see," said Thurman, who was followed by
Guillermo Mota and Graeme Lloyd.
"They have a powerful lineup," Montreal manager Felipe Alou
said. "Thurman pitched a brilliant game. We were hearing how much
the ball carries out of (Miller Park), but he had a good sinker
working."
Mark Leiter (0-1), making his first start since Sept. 23, 1997,
when he was with Philadelphia, allowed only two hits both by
Guererro and one run in five innings. He struck out five and
walked none.
"I felt like I made a couple of mistakes, otherwise I had good
movement on my sinker," Leiter said. "I get to pitch so rarely
that I didn't want to come out."
Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes thought Leiter did a good job.
"We can't even say he made a bad pitch to Vladimir because
there's no such thing as a bad pitch to Valdimir," Lopes said.
"He earned another start."
Milwaukee went ahead in the first on Ron Belliard's leadoff
double and a run-scoring single by Geoff Jenkins.
Montreal tied it in the second on a single by Guerrero, a wild
pitch and an error by third baseman Tyler Houston on a grounder by
Lee Stevens.
Guerrero's second home run of the season, a 430-foot drive, put
Montreal ahead 2-1 in the fourth.
Milwaukee loaded the bases in the fifth but Belliard hit an
inning-ending grounder.
Cabrera homered in the sixth off Allen Levrault, and
pinch-hitter Andy Tracy, called up from Class AAA Ottawa on
Thursday, connected off Levrault for a 4-1 lead in the eighth.
"It's good to show them that I can come off the bench and be a
power guy from the left side," Tracy said.
Montreal scored twice in the ninth. Ray King threw a wild pitch
while intentionally walking Fernando Seguignol, allowing Geoff Blum
to score from third. Cabrera then hit an RBI single.
"We didn't hit, so that hurt," Lopes said. "Give Thurman some
credit for that. People say you can't stop hitters from hitting the
ball out of this ballpark, but if you make good pitches, you can
stop them."
Game notes Olympic hero Ben Sheets (0-2) returns to start Saturday
against the Expos. He made two starts at Triple-A Indianapolis,
going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 2-3 innings. With Sheets rejoining
the team, Levrault returns to Indianapolis. ... Brewers pitcher
Paul Rigdon, who required 20 stitches to close a cut above his
mouth after taking a hit on a one-hopper off the bat of New York's
Ray Ordonez on Thursday, says he won't miss a start and plans on
pitching Wednesday at Atlanta. ... Montreal LHP Graeme Lloyd hasn't
allowed in run in 9 2-3 innings of relief this year. ... With 22
RBI, Lee Stevens is five short of the Expos record for April, set
by Henry Rodriguez in 1996 and tied by Guerrero last year.
