Anderson doesn't allow runner past second base
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Jimmy Anderson has stepped in and filled a void.

Anderson pitched his third straight strong game, combining combined with four relievers on an eight-hitter that led the Pittsburgh Pirates over the San Diego Padres 3-0 Friday night.

"Jimmy has been outstanding," said Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon, missing three starting pitchers because of injuries. "He's getting to where he's pounding the strike zone and working the hitters."

Anderson (2-1) held the Padres to seven singles, three of them infield hits, in six-plus innings. San Diego failed to advance a runner past second base against the left-hander.

"I was able to keep the ball down and get some ground balls in key situations," Anderson said.

Anderson stranded eight runners and San Diego, which lost for the 10th time in 12 games, left 12 on overall.

Josias Manzanillo, Scott Sauerbeck, Jose Silva and Mike Williams finished. Williams got his fourth save when he retired Ryan Klesko on a foul popup with the bases loaded to end the game.

Aramis Ramirez and Brian Giles each hit solo homers off Bobby Jones as the Pirates broke a two-game losing streak.

Jones (0-3) allowed three runs – two earned – and five hits. He struck out four, walked two and hit a batter.

Anderson struck out four and walked three and was relieved by Manzanillo after allowing a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Alex Arias in the seventh.

In his last three starts, Anderson has gone 2-0, allowing one run in 19 innings.

"I can't think about the big picture," he said. "I can only focus on my starts."

San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Williams walked pinch-hitter Dave Magadan and gave up a single to Rickey Henderson before second baseman Pat Meares' throwing error brought up Klesko.

Klesko, 3-for-8 with three homers against Williams, popped up a 3-1 changeup to Ramirez at third.

"We were just missing a key hit here and there," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said.

Ramirez hit a leadoff homer, his sixth, in the second to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Giles hit his fourth homer to start the fourth inning, increasing the lead to 3-0.

"I can't make a lot of mistakes," said Jones, who grooved fastballs on both home runs. "I have to be a little more consistent."

John Vander Wal drove in the first run on a groundout that scored Derek Bell, who doubled and moved to third on a passed ball.
