GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) A day after Greg Maddux was roughed up by the
Padres, John Burkett restored order to the Atlanta Braves' pitching
staff.

Burkett pitched seven strong innings and combined with two
relievers on a shutout as the Braves beat San Diego 3-0 Wednesday
night to snap the Padres' season-high, five-game winning streak.
Burkett (2-4) has gone seven innings or longer in each of his
last six starts for the first time since 1993 with San Francisco.
"Wow -- let's have a party," Burkett said when told of that
stat. "It's weird. I've been telling people for the last two, three
weeks, I feel like I'm seven years younger," he said, alluding to
a different workout routine.
"It's just amazing. My arm feels better than it has in seven
years."
Burkett allowed seven hits and struck out five. He also singled
twice.
"It's just control," manager Bobby Cox said. "He knows how to
change speeds."
John Rocker pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11
opportunities, and former Padre Quilvio Veras homered.
Tony Gwynn left the game with cramping in his right hamstring,
one day after coming off the disabled list. Gwynn, who turned 41 on
Wednesday, went 0-for-2 before being replaced by pinch-hitter Bubba
Trammell in the fifth inning.
Gwynn was activated Tuesday after missing 15 games because of a
strained right hamstring. The Padres' outfielder will be
re-evaluated on Thursday.
Brian Jordan's career-best 14-game hitting streak ended, but he
reached base twice on errors and was driven in both times by Javy
Lopez.
The Padres matched their season-high with three errors, leading
to two unearned runs.
Rickey Henderson extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a
single in the third and a double in the fifth. But he was thrown
out at home by center fielder Andruw Jones trying to score on Mark
Kotsay's fifth-inning single. Henderson didn't slide, and was
tagged on the right hip.
Henderson's streak is one game short of his career-best set from
July 27-Aug. 10, 1980, with Oakland.
Veras homered leading off the third off Bobby Jones (1-4), his
third.
Padres shortstop Donaldo Mendez and second baseman Damian
Jackson committed errors on consecutive plays in the fourth to
allow Jordan and B.J. Surhoff to reach. Jordan scored on Lopez's
sacrifice fly.
Jordan reached in the sixth when first baseman Ryan Klesko, a
former Brave, dropped his popup, and scored on Lopez's single.
Jones, coming off his first win since joining the Padres,
allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings. He
struck out six and walked one.
The Padres are 2-5 in Jones' starts, having scored just 14 runs
in his 73 innings on the mound.
"Bobby pitched very well," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We just
had an off night. It seems like there's always a tough-luck pitcher
and right now he's the guy. We're having a tough time scoring runs
for him."
Game notes San Diego's Dave Magadan was ejected in the sixth after
arguing a called third strike with umpire Jerry Meals. Magadan made
his third straight start in place of 3B Phil Nevin, sidelined with
a strained hamstring. ... Henderson has 2,936 career hits, 29th on
the all-time list. Up next is Frank Robinson with 2,943. ... Only
four active major leaguers are older that Gwynn, including
Henderson, who's 42. ... Kotsay, obtained from the Florida Marlins
just before opening day, agreed to terms on a $7.5 million,
two-year contract extension. He'll make $3.05 million in 2002 and
$4.45 million in 2003. ... New Chargers quarterback Doug Flutie
took batting practice with the Padres and then threw out the
ceremonial first pitch. He first threw a football to Bubba
Trammell, then a baseball. ... San Diego's eight stolen bases
Tuesday night were the most the Braves have allowed since moving to
Atlanta in 1966.
