GAME LOG
TORONTO (AP) John Jaha made a triumphant return to the majors.
| | | A's shortstop Miguel Tejada scores here on an Eric Chavez single, and also homers for the fifth straight game at Toronto. |
Jaha, playing his first big league game since last July, hit a
tiebreaking, two-run double to lead Tim Hudson and the Oakland
Athletics over the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 Wednesday night.
"To be in the big leagues feels great, and then to come back
and win the first game like this is even more special," Jaha said.
Jaha, whose 2000 season was cut short by surgery on his left
shoulder, was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the
game. The slugger who hit 35 homers with 111 RBI in 1999 was put
into the cleanup spot, and delivered.
Jaha's two-out double in the fifth inning off Chris Michalak
(3-2) made it 4-2. Terrence Long followed with a two-run single.
"It worked out perfect," Jaha said. "This was big, but I know
I got a long way to go. It's a long season, and this is just one
game."
Miguel Tejada homered for the Athletics, who have won 11 of
their last 12 games at SkyDome. Tejada has homered in five straight
games at Toronto.
Hudson (3-3) improved to 5-0 lifetime against the Blue Jays. He
is 8-0 lifetime in domed stadiums.
"I've been wondering about that, but I don't know," said
Hudson of his indoor success.
Hudson allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2-3 innings. The
25-year-old right-hander struck out six and walked one.
Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the Toronto ninth off T.J.
Mathews. Jason Isringhausen got the last out for his fifth save.
"That's a good-hitting club over there, and they're starting to
swing the bats well," Michalak said. "I was behind most of the
hitters and when I was ahead I didn't follow up. That's not my game
and unfortunately it caught up to me tonight."
Consecutive RBI singles by Jeremy Giambi and Eric Chavez gave
Oakland a 2-0 lead in the second.
Toronto tied it in the bottom half on Darrin Fletcher's bloop
RBI double in front of left fielder Mark Valdez, and Chris
Woodward's run-scoring single.
"Hudson could have very easily had a shutout going into that
seventh inning, but there was that bloop to left field," Oakland
manager Art Howe said.
The A's loaded the bases in the fifth before Jaha doubled and
Long singled.
"Jaha's hit was the one that really changed the momentum of the
game," Howe said. "Any time you get two out knocks they are
huge."
Tejada homered in the seventh off reliever John Frascatore,
giving Oakland an 8-2 lead.
Game notes Oakland's Jeremy Giambi left the game after second inning
with a strained left hamstring. He hurt himself while running to
third. ... Hudson got a no-decision against Toronto last Thursday
despite allowing just two earned runs on four hits in nine innings.
... After picking up three straight wins to start the season,
Michalak is winless in his last three outings. ... The Athletics
have won four of five games against Toronto this season. ... All
three of Toronto's pro sports teams lost Wednesday. The NHL Maple
Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs by the New Jersey Devils
and the NBA Raptors lost a second-round playoff game to the
Philadelphia 76ers.
