PHOENIX (AP) -- Barry Bonds got what he really wanted, a victory.

Bonds' home-run streak ended Wednesday night, but he hit an RBI
single off Randy Johnson that helped the San Francisco Giants ended
a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Bonds entered the game with the National League record for
homers in six consecutive games (nine). He would have set a major
league record for a seven-game span with one more home run.
Instead, he joined his teammates in snapping their losing skid. The Giants had dropped five of six during Bonds' spree.
"We won. That's all that matters," Bonds said.
Since his 20-strikeout game against Cincinnati, Johnson threw
146 pitches in eight innings to beat Philadelphia and struggled in
five innings to pick up a 4-0 win over Chicago.
In this game, Johnson stumbled delivering to Rich Aurilia in the first inning, nearly fell and was called for a balk.
"He didn't look like himself, dude," Bonds said. "He did not
look well out there at all. I've known him for 18 years, and he
didn't look right. He looked like something's wrong with him,
something's bothering him. When you throw 100-some pitches, 20
strikeouts, and you're 37 years old, it's not that easy to come
back."
Johnson thought he just had an off-game.
"I just tried to get some quick outs and threw the pitches that
they hit," he said. "I made it harder on myself, and giving up
four runs in the first three innings -- it's an uphill battle from
there."
Pedro Feliz hit his first major league home run off Arizona
reliever Greg Swindell in the ninth as the Diamondbacks lost for
the third time in 10 games.
Mark Gardner (1-3) allowed three hits, including Mark Grace's home run, in seven innings.
"That's the kind of performance you want from Gartie,
especially facing the best pitcher in baseball," Dunston said.
"It's usually the other way around."
Manager Dusty Baker called it a team victory.
"We did a nice job," Baker said. "Barry had a nice hit, we
played defense and Gardner got his first victory of the year. I
certainly wouldn't have picked Randy Johnson to get that first
victory, but that's how it worked out."
Gardner also had an RBI grounder off Johnson (5-4).
Johnson pitched only five innings for the second straight start. He allowed four runs and five hits.
Johnson was called back for pinch-hitter Erubiel Durazo after the Diamondbacks got two runners on with one out in the sixth.
The move backfired when Durazo, who has five pinch-hit homers, lined into a double play.
"Ruby hit the ball hard, but right at the first baseman,"
Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "There's not much you can do
about that."
The Giants hit Johnson hard from the first batter. Dunston lined
a one-hop single to left field to lead off and later scored on a
sacrifice fly by Jeff Kent.
"It just didn't appear to me from the first pitch of the
ballgame that he was comfortable," Brenly said.
Gardner drove in a run with a groundout in the second, and the
Giants moved ahead 4-0 with two runs in the third.
Johnson walked Rich Aurilia and Kent, and Bonds hit a sharp
single for the first run of the inning. Kent scored when Benito
Santiago hit into a double play.
Game notes
Bonds batted cleanup for the first time since August 1999.
He extended his hitting streak to 12 games. ... The Giants placed
LHP Alan Embree on the 15-day DL and recalled RHP Jamie Arnold from
Triple-A Fresno. Embree was diagnosed Wednesday as having a lower
back strain. ... Arizona RHP Armando Reynoso (shoulder strain) will
throw for Triple-A Tucson on Thursday night and could rejoin the
rotation Tuesday.
