Grace's three-run homer powers Arizona
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres fumbled their way out of sole possession of first place in the National League West, and the Arizona Diamondbacks were eager to take advantage.

San Diego catcher Ben Davis gets knocked around after colliding with Arizona's Tony Womack, who is out trying to score from third on an infield grounder.

The Diamondbacks lost starter Robert Ellis to leg injuries in the third inning, then scored six unearned runs en route to a 7-1 victory Friday night that snapped the Padres' six-game winning streak.

Mark Grace hit a three-run homer to highlight the six-run third, when San Diego committed three of its season-high five errors. Third baseman Phil Nevin committed two errors in the inning. Shortstop Chris Gomez had the other, and also finished with two.

The Diamondbacks had scored just two runs total in losing their previous two games, and had gone just 7-for-31 with runners in scoring position in their last four games.

"It wasn't exactly pretty, but we'll take anything we can get at this point," manager Bob Brenly said. "We've had opportunities in the past few games and the past couple of weeks that we were unable to cash in on, so it was good to see us get those guys across the plate after the errors."

The Padres, who had been alone atop the NL West for one day, lead the majors with 51 errors. Their previous season high was four in a 5-3 victory in Montreal on Sunday.

Padres' hard-luck starter Bobby Jones (2-6) allowed just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings, seeing his ERA drop from 2.80 to 2.67.

"He pitched well, but we killed him, or, I should say, I killed him," Nevin said. "I let two runners on and Grace hits the home run. He's not up there if I make the plays."

The Padres have committed 20 errors in Jones' 10 starts, while scoring just 26 runs for the right-hander. The Padres have played error-free in just one of Jones' starts.

"I understand errors are part of the game," Jones said. "You really can't let it affect you. I just so happens that I'm not so lucky right now."

Ellis left the game in the third with injuries to both legs that he sustained in the first. Erik Sabel (3-0) allowed two hits in three scoreless innings in relief of Ellis.

Ellis strained his left quadriceps while covering first base on Ben Davis' grounder in the second inning, then sprained his right ankle when he stepped on the bag.

He stayed in the game even though he was limping, but was replaced by pinch-runner Juan Sosa after beating out an infield single in the third.

Brenly said Ellis should be OK to make his next start.

Sosa was forced by Tony Womack's grounder, and then the Padres' troubles began. Nevin fielded Jay Bell's grounder and threw it four rows deep into stands behind first base. Luis Gonzalez was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Nevin booted Greg Colbrunn's grounder, with two runs scoring.

Grace homered to right, his seventh, to make it 5-0. After former Padre Reggie Sanders reached on Gomez's error, David Dellucci hit a run-scoring double. Grace finished 3-for-4.

Colbrunn hit a run-scoring double in the seventh that chased Jones. Jones allowed eight hits, struck out one and walked one. Dave Magadan singled in the eighth for San Diego's only run.

Game notes
The best pitching matchup of the four-game series comes Saturday night when Arizona's Curt Schilling (7-1, 2.99 ERA) faces Adam Eaton (6-2, 5.66). ... Padres right-hander Carlton Loewer had a strong rehabilitation start at Triple-A Portland on Friday night, allowing no hits in 5 2/3 shutout innings against Tacoma. Loewer has yet to pitch for the Padres even though he's in his second season with the team. He broke his lower left leg and dislocated his ankle in a hunting accident in January 2000, then developed shoulder problems that required season-ending surgery last July. Loewer was one of three right-handers obtained from Philadelphia for Andy Ashby in November 1999.
