Durham's three-run double highlights rally
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DETROIT (AP) – The slumping Chicago White Sox finally have something to feel good about.

Chris Holt
Chris Holt struck out seven in six innings for Detroit, but did not figure in the decision thanks to Chicago's comeback.

Ray Durham's three-run double highlighted a six-run ninth inning that gave Chicago an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

"Obviously, we haven't had many games like this," said Jose Valentin, who drove in the tying run. "Hopefully, this will carry over for the rest of the road trip and beyond."

Chicago, which trailed 4-0 in the game, has won two straight after dropping the first eight games on their 12-game road trip. Detroit has lost three in a row.

"There have been a lot of accusations about us quitting, but I have never seen it," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "We haven't stopped fighting, we just haven't been getting timely hits. But we did tonight."

With one out in the ninth, Todd Jones (2-3) allowed singles to Paul Konerko and Jeff Liefer before getting Herbert Perry to fly out.

Jones had an 0-2 count on pinch-hitter Carlos Lee, but he lined an RBI single, and Valentin tied the game with an infield hit off the glove of first baseman Tony Clark.

After Tony Graffanino reached on Jones' error to load the bases, Durham doubled to right-center to make it 7-4. Magglio Ordonez added an RBI double.

"That's really tough – I don't think I have ever seen Jonesy give up that many runs," Tigers manager Phil Garner said. "If Tony can make that play, we win the game, and if Todd gets the next one, we are out of it and still tied. That's how close it was."

It was Jones' fourth blown save in 14 opportunities, and his second in three days.

"You aren't a real closer until you go through a stretch like this," said Jones, who was booed off the field by the crowd of 21,053. "I earned everything the fans gave me. I can take it when they cheer me, and I can take it when they boo me."

Sean Lowe (2-0) allowed one hit and struck out six in 4 1-3 scoreless innings of relief.

"That was a dominating performance by Sean," Manuel said. "He kept us in the game, just when it looked like they might blow us out."

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead off James Baldwin in the first on RBI singles by Robert Fick and Dean Palmer.

Damion Easley made it 3-0 with a third-inning RBI single, and Fick's sixth homer made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Detroit starter Chris Holt allowed no hits in the first five innings. Valentin finally broke up the no-hitter with a triple to lead off the sixth. Ordonez had an RBI single and Harold Baines hit a sacrifice fly in the inning to make it 4-2.

Game notes
The Tigers brought LHP Kevin Tolar up from Triple-A Toledo, and optioned C Javier Cardona to the same team. Detroit also activated LHP Matt Perisho (shoulder) from the DL and designated him for assignment. Tolar got into the game after Jones was removed with two out in the ninth. ... Tigers OF Roger Cedeno had an interesting night. His first-inning single extended his hitting streak to 10 games, matching a career high. In the sixth inning, two female fans briefly delayed the game when they ran out of the stands and greeted Cedeno in the outfield. ... Sandy Alomar went 0-for-3 to extend his hitless streak to 15 at-bats. ... Baines went 0-for-4 and is now hitting .129 on the season.
