RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO (AP) – Carl Everett's decision to bat left-handed against a left-hander paid off in a big way.

Everett hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning and the Boston Red Sox won their fourth straight, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 Saturday.

The switch-hitter's towering homer off Dan Plesac (0-2) hit off Windows restaurant in center field. It was Everett's sixth home run.

"That's my longest in a while," Everett said. "When I came back to the dugout, David Cone said I hit someone's soup."

Everett struck out when he hit right-handed against Plesac on Friday.

"In my last at-bat against him, he didn't give me anything to hit right-handed. I've also been swinging the bat well left-handed, so I decided to go left-handed," Everett said.

Plesac said he wasn't surprised Everett hit left-handed.

"I'm sure he was trying to take away the changeup," Plesac said. "He's a real good hitter, whether he's left-handed or right-handed. He won the war today. He got a good pitch to hit and he didn't miss it."

Manny Ramirez homered off the facing of SkyDome's fourth deck in left field in the second. His 17th home run made it 1-0.

Pete Schourek (1-3) got the last out of the eighth for the win. Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his third save.

The Blue Jays have lost four in a row and 11 of their past 13.

"It seems that everything that could go wrong is going wrong right now," Toronto manager Buck Martinez said.

Boston starter Tim Wakefield pitched six scoreless innings before Carlos Delgado led of the seventh with a single and Brian Simmons hit a two-out RBI double.

Wakefield then hit Jeff Frye with a pitch, prompting Boston manager Jimy Williams to bring in reliever Rich Garces. Wakefield glared at Williams as the manager walked to the mound.

Wakefield, making his third start of the season, gave up one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

"I'm keeping them off the knuckleball by throwing more curves," Wakefield said.

Toronto starter Joey Hamilton, who lasted just 1 1/3 innings in his last start, allowed one run on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
