GAME LOG
PHOENIX (AP) The death of his father sent Tony Womack's season
into a tailspin. Only now is he beginning to feel he's a productive
part of things again for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
| | | Adam Eaton had his start pushed back after cutting himself with a knife while opening a DVD package. |
Womack singled with the bases loaded off Trevor Hoffman in the
ninth inning Saturday night to give Arizona its eighth victory in a
row, 2-1 over the San Diego Padres.
Brian Anderson threw 6 1/3 shutout innings for Arizona before leaving with a strained left groin. Anderson said the injury is serious.
"I'll get an MRI on Monday that will show how bad it is," Anderson said, "but I can tell you right now that it's pretty significant. It's bad."
Womack missed six games following the death of his father on April 22, then temporarily lost his leadoff spot when he came back.
"I've been working ever since my dad's passing. I really haven't been finding a steady stream," Womack said. "But I've been working at it and it's finally starting to pay off a little bit."
Hoffman entered the game to face Womack with the bases full and
one out. Womack singled over the head of right fielder Bubba
Trammell on Hoffman's second pitch.
Womack was 0-for-4 before his single. He was out on a bunt once,
then hit three solid shots that were caught in the outfield.
"It's really good to see him get a big hit," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "I mean, Tony hit the ball hard every time up tonight."
San Diego had tied the game at 1 on a two-out, RBI single by Trammell off closer Bret Prinz in the ninth. It was the second blown save in a row for Prinz (2-0), who got the victory.
Reliever Tom Davey (0-1) walked Craig Counsell with one out in
the ninth, then gave up a single to pinch hitter Danny Bautista and walked pinch hitter Mark Grace on four pitches to load the bases.
"The guys fought hard to come back and tie it, but when you get in a jam like that, it's tough to get out of it," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.
In Arizona's eight-game winning streak, four of the wins have come by one run. San Diego has lost seven of eight, including five in a row to the Diamondbacks.
Reliever Greg Swindell started the ninth for Arizona and struck
out Rickey Henderson, but Mark Kotsay doubled the right-center.
Swindell got Ryan Klesko to foul out to third base, and was
relieved by the right-hander Prinz.
Prinz walked Phil Nevin on a 3-2 pitch, then Trammell singled
between third and short to tie the game.
Anderson, in his best outing of the season, threw just 60
pitches and allowed only three hits before he was injured while
getting Klesko to ground out to second to start the seventh inning.
Anderson, who struck out three and didn't walk a batter, said he
felt mild discomfort on the three pitches before his injury.
"Then the last pitch I threw," Anderson said, "I've never
been a part to a gunshot but that's what it felt like. I followed
through and it felt like my leg was still back at second base.
Adam Eaton allowed one run on five hits in seven innings for San Diego.
"He pitched great, but we're having a tough time scoring runs
right now," Bochy said.
The 23-year-old right-hander had missed his last start because
he accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach with a pocket knife.
The injury, which required two stitches, occurred when Eaton was
trying to open a package of DVDs.
"Everything went well," Eaton said. "The only time I felt it
was when I was warming up. Once I got on the mound, I was fine."
Arizona broke a scoreless tie when Jay Bell led off the sixth
with a triple past Henderson in the left field corner. Bell scored
on Reggie Sanders' one-out single.
Bell has batted cleanup in the last three games and is 8-for-12
with two homers and four RBI.
Game notes The run off Prinz broke a string of 19 scoreless innings for the Arizona bullpen. ... Grace was out of the Arizona starting
lineup for the fourth consecutive day with a strained left hamstring. ... Arizona is 15-4 since May 13. ... The Diamondbacks recalled INF Junior Spivey from Triple-A Tucson, and sent RHP Geraldo Guzman back to Tucson. ... The Padres are 8-16 against the
NL West, 1-5 against the Diamondbacks. ... Arizona's three-game lead over second-place Los Angeles is the biggest any team has had in the NL West this season.
