ARLINGTON, Texas Rangers left-hander Darren Oliver will be sidelined for at least two weeks after being hit on the left thumb by a line drive Monday.
Oliver was struck by a ball off the bat of Chicago's Tony Graffanino, who was leading off the game, a 7-4 White Sox victory. While X-rays were negative, Oliver's thumb was badly bruised and had a cut that required stitches. The Rangers said they will place him on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Oliver was replaced by R.A. Dickey, the Rangers' No. 1 pick in the 1996 amateur draft. He was making his fourth major league appearance. In addition to saying they would put Oliver on the DL Tuesday, they Rangers will activate closer Tim Crabtree from the disabled list and recall right-hander Aaron Myette from Triple-A Oklahoma. Crabtree, 4-for-4 in save opportunities, had been sidelined since April 15 with soreness in his lower back. Myette was 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA in six starts for Oklahoma. Dickey (0-1), who gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings and was the loser against Chicago, will be optioned to Oklahoma to make room for Myette. As soon as the ball bounced off Oliver's thumb and toward first base, he walked off the mound, not even waiting for Texas trainers to reach him. Graffanino reached on an infield single and was retired on a fielder's choice. The White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first. The first run was charged to Oliver, who threw just four pitches but had his ERA rise from 7.85 to 8.16. Oliver's outing was the shortest in the majors this season. The last starting pitcher to throw to just one batter was Colorado right-hander Pedro Astacio, last Sept. 6 against the Chicago Cubs. He also was struck on the throwing hand by a leadoff hitter's liner. Oliver was hoping to rebound from his worst start of the season. He surrendered seven runs and eight hits over just 2 1/3 innings in an 8-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Oliver won his first four starts of the season but pitched into the seventh inning in only one of them. The Rangers supported him with 33 runs in those outings. |
