ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Toe Nash, a high school dropout signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last season, was released by the team Saturday.
The move came one day after Nash was released from jail after pleading guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Nash, 20, was facing life in prison on three counts of aggravated rape, according to Arthur Lemann IV, Nash's lawyer.
Nash served over eight months in jail in Ascension Parish. He will remain on probation for five years, Lemann said.
"I'm disappointed,'' said Larry Reynolds, Nash's agent, "but we're confident once people get to know the whole story and Toe, in particular, that he'll be playing for another organization.''
Last season, Nash played for the Princeton Devil Rays of the Appalachian League in West Virginia, batting .240 in 47 games with eight homers and 29 RBIs. Princeton general manager Jim Holland said the team had no problems with Nash's behavior. |
