NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cincinnati Reds selected Luke Prokopec with one of their three picks in the major league draft Monday.

Prokopec has a 11-17 career major league record with a 5.30 ERA in 56 games for Toronto and Los Angeles. The Reds paid $50,000 for Prokopec and must keep him on the 25-man roster all season or offer him back to the Dodgers for $25,000.

The Reds also took right-handers Blake Williams from the St. Louis Cardinals and Jerome Gamble from the Boston Red Sox.

There were 28 picks made in the major league portion of the draft, including three by Boston and the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Red Sox entered the draft with nine openings on their 40-man roster. They selected lefties Javier Lopez from Arizona and Matt White from Cleveland, and center fielder Adrian Brown from Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays drafted right-handers Aquilino Lopez from Seattle and Gary Majewski from the Chicago White Sox, and outfielder Jason Dubois from the Cubs.

There were only 12 players selected last year. The most notable was Corey Thurman, who went 2-3 with a 4.37 in 43 games for Toronto.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected shortstop Enrique Cruz from the New York Mets with the top pick this year. Cruz batted .291 with six homers and 45 RBI last season for Class-A St. Lucie.

The Brewers also selected left-hander Matt Ford from Toronto and acquired infielder Ryan Gripp from the Cubs to complete an earlier trade for catcher Paul Bako.

The Texas Rangers also made two picks, selecting former college star Marshall McDougall from Cleveland and lefty John Koronka from Cincinnati.

McDougall, acquired last summer from Oakland for Ricardo Rincon, hit a NCAA-record six consecutive homers and drove in 16 runs in a game for Florida State in 1999.

Tampa Bay took catcher Hector Luna from Cleveland with the second pick and San Diego took right-hander Buddy Hernandez from Atlanta third. The Padres also selected center fielder Shane Victorino.

The Padres then traded Hernandez to Oakland for utilityman Jose Flores. San Diego also acquired right-hander Mike Wodnicki to complete Sunday's trade that sent Brett Tomko to St. Louis.

The only other team to make multiple selections were Oakland and Kansas City. The A's picked right-hander Michael Neu from Cincinnati and outfielder Rontrez Johnson from Texas; the Royals took right-hander Daniel Carrasco and catcher Ronny Paulino from Pittsburgh.

The Chicago Cubs selected lefty Derek Thompson from Cleveland and then sold him to Los Angeles.

A few other deals were completed after the draft. The White Sox received lefty Neal Cotts and outfielder Daylan Holt from Oakland for the Billy Koch trade. The Blue Jays received right-hander Jason Arnold from Oakland to complete Sunday's four-way deal that sent Erubiel Durazo to the A's, Elmer Dessens to Arizona and Felipe Lopez to Cincinnati.

The Minnesota Twins released DH David Ortiz before the draft to make room for shortstop Jose Morban, who was selected from Texas.

Pittsburgh released lefty Jimmy Anderson to make room for right-hander Matt Roney, who was selected from Colorado.
