Mondesi, Acevedo lead way for Cibao Eagles

Associated Press

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico -- New York Yankees outfielder Raul Mondesi homered and Jose Acevedo of the Cincinnati Reds struck out 12 in seven innings, leading the Dominican Republic's Cibao Eagles to a 6-0 victory over Puerto Mayaguez Indians in the Caribbean Series.

Acevedo allowed just two hits as the Eagles tied the Indians for first place in the tournament with a 5-1 record. The teams will play Saturday to decide the championship.

Mondesi hit a solo homer in the fourth inning off Puerto Rican starter Dickey Gonzanlez.

Luis Polonia and American League MVP Miguel Tejada hit consecutive RBI singles, and Boston's David Ortiz added a two-run double in the first inning.

The Eagles added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Baltimore's Tony Batista, and two runs in the ninth on solo homer Felix Jose and an RBI single by Rafael Furcal of the Atlanta Braves.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Damaso Marte came on in the eighth inning and pitched two perfect innings for the Dominicans.

In the early game Friday, Orlando Merced hit a two-run homer to lead Puerto Rico's Caguas Creoles over Mexico's Caneros of Los Mochis 3-1.

Caguas went 2-4 in the tournament and Caneros went 0-6.

Winner Omar Olivares allowed one run and nine hits in seven innings.

Merced, who plays for Houston, connected off David Dominguez in the fifth inning for his third homer of the series.

Alex Cintron's RBI single in the fourth off Salvador Rodriguez had put Caguas ahead. Jayson Bass drove in Caneros' run in the eighth.
