Torre hopes to write about Yankees when he retires

Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees manager Joe Torre might write about his time in pinstripes -- but after he retires.

"I'm sure I'll be approached and I may want to do it when I'm finished," Torre said. "I've been approached to write. I thought seriously about writing it. It wasn't an expose. Just what goes on as far as during our good run and after that. It became too much work. If you can't do it right, don't do it."

Torre has managed the Yankees since 1996, winning four World Series championships and five AL pennants.

"There may be stuff in there, but I'm not going to write it just to have people drool," Torre said. "A lot of it is part of what goes on. You don't make a left turn here just to get this story in. It's a part of what affected you in here and I think is interesting."

Yankees pitcher David Wells has had a controversial spring training following the release of galleys of his autobiography, which made claims of steroid and amphetamine use in the major leagues. Wells said in the galleys he was ``half-drunk'' when he pitched a perfect game for the Yankees in 1998.

Don't look for a tell-all book from Torre.

"It's everybody's right to do what they feel is the right thing for them to do," Torre said. "There's something about the sanctity of the clubhouse. ... I've lived my whole life knowing how sacred that was."
