Cause of escalator incident remains unknown

Associated Press

DENVER -- All seven escalators at Coors Field will remain closed at least until July 25 while officials try to determine what caused one of them to malfunction and throw dozens of fans on top of each other, the team said Monday.

The escalators won't run during the Rockies' next home stand from Wednesday through Sunday, team spokesman Jay Alves said.

After that, the Rockies play on the road until July 25. That's the soonest the escalators will be back in operation, he said.

"We wanted to be as diligent and thorough as possible,'' Alves said.

The escalators were shut down after last Wednesday's accident injured 32 people. Witnesses said a three-story escalator suddenly sped up after a post-game fireworks show, dumping screaming fans into a pile at the bottom.

Alves said the Rockies will ask city inspectors to recertify the escalators before they reopen.

Inspectors spent Monday searching for the cause.

City officials found no problems in a check of the escalator last month, said Julius Zsako of Denver's Community Planning and Development Agency, which oversees the inspections.
