Grieve expected to see specialist for blood clot

Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays designated hitter Ben Grieve is scheduled to see a specialist Tuesday about a small blood clot in his upper right arm.

Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said Grieve flew to Dallas on Monday to see vascular surgeon Greg Pearl.

Grieve was admitted to St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg on Friday and released Sunday.

Team officials said the clot, which has been treated with medication, has not completely dissolved.

Grieve was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday after originally being in the starting lineup that night. He took the field for batting practice but reported discomfort in the arm and was sent back to the clubhouse.

"His clot hasn't cleared up,'' Piniella said before Sunday's game against Texas. "I feel terrible for him. The important thing is, he's not in danger. At the same time, it's something that's got to resolved.''
