M's confidently sit atop the rankings

MAY 8, 2001

What did we learn from last week? Well, the Mariners are still the class of baseball; the Cubs, believe it or not, aren't going away; Rickey Henderson might not be shot after all; and the Tigers show they, in fact, do have a pulse.

Read 'em and weep.

KEY: PVS=previous ranking   RS/RA= Runs scored/runs allowed   REC.= record (through May 7)

TEAM PVS RS/RA REC. ESPN.com SAYS
1. Mariners 1 166/119 23-8 Has anybody noticed that Mike Cameron is having a better year than Ichiro?
2. Twins 4 150/113 21-8 Radke, Milton and Mays are combined 13-3 with 2.50 ERA; by the way, Radke averaging over 8 IP per start
3. Indians 8 186/129 20-9 Rumor has it Browns looking to sign Bartolo Colon and C.C. Sabathia for the defensive line
4. Cubs 5 155/118 20-11 Bill Mueller's .945 OPS trails only Chipper Jones and Phil Nevin among major-league third basemen
5. Red Sox 2 155/103 19-12 Perhaps Derek Lowe is paying the price for the 200 innings he's thrown in relief past two seasons
6. Blue Jays 3 174/132 19-12 Tony Batista's all-or-nothing approach (9 HRs, but a .194 average and .241 OBP) starting to wear thin
7. Phillies 7 138/124 19-12 Hey, we knocked Travis Lee earlier, but he has 24 walks and a nifty .900 OPS
8. Dodgers 6 146/138 18-14 Dream matchup for Game 1 of the World Series: Kevin Brown vs. Pedro Martinez
9. Yankees 9 157/133 19-13 Bronx Burners are 10-0 vs. Royals and Orioles, a pathetic 9-13 against real teams
10. Giants 12 152/172 16-15 Rotation has a 5.72 ERA, worst in the NL. Hmm, perhaps we have them rated too high?
11. Astros 13 165/164 16-14 Let's see, Brad Ausmus is hitting .194 and the staff ERA is 5.22 (nearly as bad as last year's 5.41). Tony Eusebio, anyone?
12. Braves 16 121/139 15-17 Haven't looked this bad since the days when Andres Thomas patrolled shortstop
13. Rockies 11 197/182 15-16 Brian Bohanon led NL in road ERA last year; he's 2.92 in two starts this year. But he's 0-4, 14.88 at Coors Field
14. Angels 21 131/131 15-16 The 5-foot-8 David Eckstein is quickly becoming a Power Alley favorite
15. Reds 10 156/170 16-15 Road warriors: Reds 11-5 away from home, but just 5-10 at Cinergy
16. Cardinals 14 152/146 15-15 Matt Morris has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last six outings (4-1 with a 1.20 ERA during that time)
17. Brewers 15 159/138 16-15 Hey, Davey Lopes let's see more of this Chad Fox guy (0.00 ERA in 9.2 IP; 14 K's, one BB)
18. Mets 20 125/152 14-17 Tale of his career: Just when Jay Payton started hitting again, he got hurt. Nothing new there
19. Padres 24 170/151 15-16 Have we said before that we just love Rickey?
20. D-Backs 18 176/160 16-16 Big Unit and Schilling have more strikeouts combined (133) than the entire Tigers staff (129)
21. Rangers 17 173/209 12-19 So, who will next manage the Rangers? Heck, why not bring back Doug Rader
22. Marlins 22 141/137 13-17 Having cut down on his K's (just 30 in 30 games), Preston Wilson slowly developing into a top-level player
23. Royals 23 141/180 11-20 Rookie Dee Brown proving he belongs (has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 starts)
24. Expos 19 120/150 12-20 Started the season 6-1, but have gone 6-19 since
25. Orioles 25 112/151 13-19 Jason Johnson is (1.00 ERA at home in four starts) one of the few bright spots on an otherwise brutal team
26. Athletics 26 138/161 11-20 On the comeback trail: Jim Mecir hasn't been scored on in last seven appearances, spanning a total of 10 IP
27. Pirates 28 119/151 12-18 Put an end to the nonsense already. Nail Derek Bell and his sorry act to the bench for good
28. Tigers 29 139/155 12-17 The overrated Roger Cedeno and his .274 OBP at the top of the lineup just isn't cutting it
29. White Sox 27 129/163 10-19 Aside from David Wells' three wins, Sox have just three other victories from their starting staff
30. Devil Rays 30 109/181 9-22 Can't hit, can't pitch and definitely can't field (lead majors with 33 errors)
