Twins move up two spots to No. 4

JULY 3, 2001

It's getting a little ho-hum around here with the Mariners having a stranglehold on the top spot. But don't worry, we still have a little entertainment for you in the spaces below.

Enjoy, enjoy.

KEY: PVS=previous ranking   RS/RA= Runs scored/runs allowed   REC.= record (through July 2)

TEAM PVS RS/RA REC. ESPN.com SAYS
1. Mariners 1 494/353 60-21 Try and hit him if you can: Jeff Nelson holding opponents to a .122 BA
2. D-Backs 2 435/344 50-31 What a difference a year makes: Mark Grace hitting .327 this year after struggling to hit just .280 in 2000 for Cubs
3. Red Sox 3 412/320 48-33 While Manny Ramirez leads the AL in homers (25) and RBI (82), he's also second in strikeouts (82)
4. Twins 6 411/367 50-31 Yeah, Twins are in first place, but there must be concern with Brad Radke, who has just one win in eight starts since May 17
5. Cubs 4 353/321 47-33 Corey Patterson isn't the answer for this year; might Johnny Damon be?
6. Yankees 8 411/342 47-33 One word on the Derek Jeter bobblehead doll: terrible. Not even close to resembling him
7. Braves 7 364/328 45-36 Steve Reed and Steve Karsay have yet to allow a run in 10 combined IP since coming over from Indians
8. Phillies 11 402/385 47-34 Jose Mesa had more saves (3) in recent five-game sweep of Marlins than he had in the rest of the month of June (2)
9. Indians 5 451/404 46-33 For a guy who has a team-high eight wins, Dave Burba sure has a high ERA (5.90)
10. Astros 12 430/420 43-37 Rookie Roy Oswalt is 4-0 with a no-decision in his five starts. A keeper for sure
11. Dodgers 16 397/379 45-37 Marquis Grissom still doesn't get on base enough (.276 OBP), but his power numbers have been impressive (15 HR, .525 SLG)
12. Giants 9 400/407 44-38 Power Alley kudos to Rich Aurilia, a most deserving All-Star selection
13. Marlins 13 391/353 41-41 If not for their putrid play vs. Phillies (2-11), Marlins could be challenging for NL East lead
14. Cardinals 10 386/373 40-40 Albert Pujols hit .370 in April, .333 in May and .330 in June. Now, that's consistency
15. Orioles 21 363/389 39-42 Fishy isn't it that Cal Ripken suddenly shot ahead of David Bell to become the AL's starting 3B for All-Star Game
16. Brewers 14 384/345 39-41 Jamey Wright has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last five starts and is 4-1 during that span
17. Athletics 22 385/376 39-41 Dating back to May 3, Tim Hudson has allowed three or fewer runs in 12 starts and has lowered his ERA by more than three runs (6.35 to 3.17)
18. Rockies 17 499/459 38-43 Now that he's in Colorado, just imagine what Dan Miceli's ERA (6.93 in 29 games with Marlins) will rise to
19. Angels 15 340/349 38-43 Despite his 21 homers, Troy Glaus is down from last year (.250 BA with 70 strikeouts)
20. White Sox 18 350/385 38-41 Jose Valentin hitting much better with runners on base (.324) than with the bases empty (.269)
21. Blue Jays 19 403/397 38-44 While being Cy Young worthy on the road (6-0), Chris Carpenter is far from that at home (1-5)
22. Padres 20 417/418 37-45 Kevin Towers should be applauded for his acquiring D'Angelo Jimenez from the Yankees
23. Royals 26 376/425 34-47 Rey Sanchez deserves some props for his .300 BA and for the fact that he has just two errors in 395 total chances at shortstop
24. Mets 29 327/403 31-46 Might it be time to finally pull the plug on the offensively-challenged Rey Ordonez?
25. Expos 24 348/408 34-48 Shocking, but true: Vlad finally hit his first grand slam on Sunday after 2,457 career at-bats
26. Rangers 25 449/488 32-49 Are tied with D-Rays for fewest numbers of home wins (14) among AL teams
27. Pirates 27 341/444 30-50 0-8 to now 4-8. We are now officialy on the Todd Ritchie bandwagon
28. Reds 28 364/423 32-49 Alex Ochoa finished up hitting a sizzling .368 in the month of June
29. Tigers 23 361/442 32-46 The Rico says: "I have burned my Tigers hat and jersey and refuse to pay anymore attention to this sad-sack of a team"
30. Devil Rays 30 322/520 24-58 Believe it or not, Rays have a legit All-Star in Fred McGriff (.332-14-47)
