You think Cal Ripken's selection is fishy? What's fishy is the fact that David Bell and his .295 OBP were even close. Bell barely ranks in the top 10 of AL third basemen, and he came this close to starting the All-Star Game. Why don't we name Jaime Navarro as the starting pitcher?

As star-studded as the Mariners bullpen may be, perhaps its strongest pitcher is one of the least ballyhooed. I understand that the walk-prone Jeff Nelson is a Power Alley fave, but look at Arthur Rhodes (5-0, 1.96, two saves) and you may see the true key to the dominance of the M's bullpen.

Laugh if you must at the Devil Rays now. But their "build through the farm system" approach is starting to pay off. Young players such as Joe Kennedy, Jesus Colome, Travis Phelps, Steve Cox, Brent Abernathy, and Aubrey Huff are doing well as rookies, and future call-ups such as Toby Hall, Josh Hamilton, Carl Crawford, and Dewon Brazelton have the future of this team looking very bright.

“ Can we officially rename it M's Alley? ”

Stat of the first half: The Mariners have had more days off than the rest of their division has had days over .500 -- combined!

What's up at third? I agree with you guys. I mean seriously, it seems awfully suspicious that Cal Ripken got double the number of votes in the final week of voting, than he had total in the first month of the balloting. Even though David Bell probably should not have been the starting third baseman anyway, 800,000 votes in a week is ridiculous!

The Cubs' bats will come around and they don't need to go sacrificing the richest farm system in the game to buy a center fielder when they have enough of them already. The Cubs will win, as long as they stay healthy, because of the F-Troop in the bullpen (Farnsworth, Fassero, Felix, and Flash).

Steve Stauffer
Berne, Ind.

This was your comment about the Red Sox this week: In addition to leading the league in homers and RBI, Manny Ramirez is also second in strikeouts. My question to you: So what? Would it make you happy if those 82 outs were tappers back to the pitcher? The guy is a legitimate Triple Crown threat and the easy choice for MVP so far (I shudder to think where the Sox would be without him). So cut the guy some slack. Besides, there are plenty of other problems on the Sox's squad if you want to nit-pick.

Brian Edwards
Ithaca, N.Y.

If the best comment you can come up with for the Yankees is that Derek Jeter's bobblehead doll doesn't look like him, well maybe they shouldn't be ranked so high.

Peter Friberg
San Diego
