Scouting Report
1999 Season Paul Sorrento suffered through a second straight disappointing season with the Devil Rays. He tried hard but couldn't master the switch to playing the outfield, and he struggled at the plate when he did get into the lineup. His sole highlight was a 491-foot homer at Texas, the longest in stadium history.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Sorrento was a wreck at the plate most days, biting at weak offspeed stuff, chasing fastballs out of the zone and missing the handful of pitches he should have been able to handle. While there was no faulting his effort or professionalism, Sorrento proved that as an outfielder he is a pretty good first baseman. He just does not have the speed, agility or arm to play the outfield. He's a non-factor on the bases as well.
2000 Outlook The Devil Rays declined Sorrento's 2000 option, then didn't offer him arbitration as a free agent, ensuring that he'll play elsewhere this season. He'll look for a team that will allow him to call first base home.
