Scouting Report
1999 Season Jeff Barry had just 30 major league games to show for 10 seasons as a pro when he was promoted to Colorado in late June. In his first extended opportunity at the big league level, he did a solid job as part of the revolving door in center field.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense A natural righthanded hitter, the switch-hitting Barry is more of a threat from that side. He does have gap power but can be overpowered when batting lefthanded. He's vulnerable to breaking pitchers once he falls behind in the count. When he started, the Rockies usually batted him sixth or seventh. Barry is a fundamentally sound outfielder who makes good reads and has an accurate arm. However, he's a tad short in every area, which is why he never has played regularly in the majors.
2000 Outlook Barry is a fifth outfielder in the big leagues. He'll get some chances to play because he doesn't make mistakes, but never will be able to claim a full-time job.
