After initially planning on a trip to Dallas to follow his visit with the San Antonio Spurs, Jason Kidd apparently won't decide until after his stay in the Alamo City whether or not to meet with Mavericks officials in Texas. If Kidd decides against a Dallas visit, however, that doesn't rule out the Mavericks as a possible free-agent destination for the New Jersey free agent. A sitdown with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is still expected this week, even if it has to be out-of-state. Kidd's agent, Jeff Schwartz, said before starting their Sunday-Monday meetings with the Spurs that skipping a Dallas stop merely appeals to Kidd as a means of avoiding another media frenzy. In San Antonio, after arriving Sunday afternoon with wife Joumana and Schwartz, Kidd's movements were trailed by a local television station's helicopter. The Kidds were also greeted by reporters at their hotel after having dinner at the home of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "It doesn't mean he's not going to go [on] another trip -- he still may go," Schwartz said before arriving in San Antonio. "He's still thinking about Dallas, but nothing's been set up." "Jason," Schwartz reminded, "is low-key. He wants to keep it sort of private." The need to actually visit Dallas is lessened because Kidd was drafted by the Mavericks in 1994 and knows the area well. He also has a longstanding relationship with Mavericks coach Don Nelson, dating to Kidd's days as a high school star in Oakland, which coincided with Nelson's coaching tenure in Golden State. Kidd is also well-acquainted with Cuban, who is undoubtedly willing to travel anywhere Kidd requests for face-to-face talks. Besides signing with the Spurs or returning to New Jersey, Dallas is the only other destination Kidd is considering. But because the Mavericks are over the salary cap, a sign-and-trade with the Nets is the only way Dallas could re-acquire Kidd. That scenario would require Kidd to choose the Mavericks as his new team and attempt to coerce the Nets into participating in a sign-and-trade, in which New Jersey would have to be willing to take back Steve Nash or Nick Van Exel as the centerpiece of the swap. Nelson is expected to return from his off-season home in Maui this week, whether or not Kidd visits, with Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal also scheduled to visit the Spurs and Mavericks this week.
