Spurs trying to convince Kidd to join them

ESPN.com news services

SAN ANTONIO -- Superstar point guard Jason Kidd was in the Alamo City on Monday after chartering a private jet for what he described as a one-night stayover. The San Antonio Spurs continued their attempts to woo him into making a more permanent return trip.

Kidd arrived with his wife, Joumana, on Sunday afternoon. They were greeted on the tarmac by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and whisked in a black limousine van to a hotel where team officials had reserved accommodations for them.

The Spurs might be the only team with the money available to offer Kidd the kind of contract and teammates it would take to get him to leave the Meadowlands. Kidd earned $10 million this past season.

A backcourt of Kidd and point guard Tony Parker playing with Tim Duncan might make San Antonio the early favorite for next season.

There has been speculation that Parker, the team's second-leading scorer last season, is not happy about the Spurs' pursuit of Kidd. A league source told the San Antonio Express-News in Monday's editions that Parker's agent, Marc Fleisher, has urged the player to be more aggressive in expressing any concerns to Spurs officials. Both the source and Spurs officials said, however, that Parker has not yet done so.

Parker has said publicly that he is open to playing with Kidd. But privately he has told teammates and others that he has some concerns about how the pairing would work and his future with the team.

"Pop has talked to Tony continually throughout the process and as late as this afternoon," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said Sunday. "Their conversations have always been positive. Tony has said he thinks they would be great together."

Also, Popovich has asked Kidd about playing alongside Parker and Kidd has been positive about the idea.

The New Jersey Nets were 26-56 the year before Kidd arrived. They were 101-63 in the two regular seasons that led to conference championships.

The Spurs' schedule for Kidd was light Sunday, with the exception of dinner at Popovich's home. Team officials were expected to intensify their courtship of Kidd on Monday.

Officials said Popovich and Buford probably will make a more formal presentation later Monday to Kidd and his agent, Jeff Schwartz.

Kidd became a free agent on July 1. He reportedly was to choose among the Nets, Spurs, Dallas and Denver by July 16.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
