EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After averaging less
than 10 minutes off the bench with the Philadelphia 76ers,
restricted free agent center Todd MacCulloch is apparently ready
to cash in with the New Jersey Nets.
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that MacCulloch has reached
agreement on a six-year, $33.75 million offer sheet with the
Nets.
The 7-foot, 255-pound center cannot officially sign the offer
sheet until July 18 -- the first day the NBA moratorium is lifted.
The Sixers have two weeks from Wednesday to match the offer, but
will likely let MacCulloch go since the deal would force them to
pay a luxury tax. Philadelphia has reportedly reached agreements
with center Dikembe Mutombo and guard Aaron McKie on multi-year
deals.
MacCulloch, 25, will likely start for the Nets since they are
not expected to re-sign free agent Evan Eschmeyer and Jamie
Feick continues to be bothered by an Achilles' tendon injury.
New Jersey selected Stanford center Jason Collins with one of
its three first-round picks.
A second-round pick of the Sixers in 1999, MacCulloch averaged
4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds in 9.5 minutes over 63 games last
season. But he made an impression in the NBA Finals when he
scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in 16 minutes off the
bench in Game 2.
In addition to MacCulloch, the Nets also expressed interest in
free agent center Nazr Mohammed, who was sent by the Sixers to
Atlanta in the Mutombo deal.
