Rodman arrested early Friday morning

Associated Press

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman was arrested Friday after a woman accused him of assaulting her.

He posted $25,000 bail and was released from jail, Newport Beach police Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

Rodman, who has a history of run-ins with the law, was accused of domestic violence and battery. Police said the case will be presented to the district attorney's office, which will decide whether to press charges.

"As always, when something surrounds Dennis Rodman it is blown way out of proportion. What would a story on Dennis be if the press could not make a great controversy. That is what keeps him such a marketable superstar. I have not yet spoken with Dennis but I am sure there is a logical explanation," Rodman's agent, Darren Prince, said in a released statement Friday.

Prince said the alleged victim is Rodman's fiancee.

The 41-year-old Rodman was arrested early Friday at his Newport Beach home, Shulman said. The unidentified woman called police from a pay phone near Pacific Coast Highway.

The woman "alleged that Dennis Rodman assaulted her, and she did have a small swelling to her upper lip on the inside portion, and claimed to have a bump on her head,'' Shulman said.

The woman did not need to go to a hospital, police said.

To prove domestic violence, prosecutors will have to show that Rodman had a dating or live-in relationship with the woman.

Since Rodman retired from the NBA, Newport Beach police have gone to his home more than 70 times because of loud parties. He also was convicted of drunken driving.

A year ago, he was arrested and accused of obstructing officers investigating a code violation at his seaside restaurant. Prosecutors did not press charges.

In May, Rodman reached a settlement with a Las Vegas casino worker who contended he was humiliated when Rodman rubbed dice all over the worker's body at a hotel in 1997.
