PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Senior B.J. Prager scored a season-high five goals to lead defending champion Princeton to an 11-9 win over top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the semifinals of the NCAA lacrosse tournament Saturday. Brad Dumont added two goals and Brendan Tierney had a goal and two assists as the Tigers (10-4) reversed an opening-day loss to Johns Hopkins (12-2) in advancing to their eighth title game since 1992.
Princeton, which is 6-1 in championship games, losing only to Syracuse in 2000, will play Syracuse, who ousted Virginia with a 12-11 overtime victory. The championship game is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. at Rutgers University.
Adam Doneger and Kyle Barrie had three goals apiece for Johns Hopkins, which rallied from five goals down early in the second quarter to close within two goals on three times in the second half.
The last time came when Kevin Boland scored with 3:41 to play to make it 11-9.
Boland had two great chances to make it a one-goal game, but he was stopped by Princeton goalie Julian Gould, the second stop coming with 2:09 to play.
Gould also made a nice stop with a minute left to play on Bobby Benton, the Blue Jays' leading scorer who was shut out on a fine defensive effort by defender Scott Farrell.
Princeton took control early as Dumont and Josh White scored on the Tigers' first two shots against goalie Nick Murtha.
Doneger cut Princeton's lead in half with 8:42 left in the first quarter, but Tierney set up Prager for an extra-man goal, and then Dumont and Prager scored in a 35-second span in the final minute of the quarter to make it 5-1.
Tierney, the son of Princeton coach Bill Tierney, tallied early in the second quarter, and Johns Hopkins futilely tried to catch up the rest of the game. |
