PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Tom Hardy forced overtime with a late goal and scored again with 32 seconds left in the second overtime to give Syracuse a 12-11 victory over Virginia in the semifinals of the NCAA lacrosse tournament Saturday.
The victory sends the Orangemen (14-2) to the championship game for the fourth straight year. It also sets up a third straight title matchup with Princeton (10-4), which defeated top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the first semifinal at Rutgers University.
Princeton, which has won six titles since 1992, took last year's crown in overtime. Syracuse picked up its seventh title in 2000, beating the Tigers 13-7.
Michael Springer had four goals and two assists for Syracuse, which also got two goals apiece from Hardy and Michael Powell in beating Virginia for the second time this year.
John Christmas and Joe Yevoli had three goals apiece for Virginia (11-4). The Cavaliers won the NCAA title in 1999, beating Syracuse.
Virginia goalie Tillman Johnson made three outstanding saves in the second overtime, stopping Hardy once and A.J. Shannon twice.
Johnson did not have a chance on the game winner. Harty got around midfielder Nick Russo behind the net and came out in front all alone. He waited a split second and bounced a shot into the net, setting off a Syracuse celebration.
Hardy's game-tying goal came seconds after Brenndan Mohler turned the ball over with Virginia on the attack.
Ironically, Mohler had given Virginia the lead at 11-10 with a great run from midfield and a goal with 4:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Springer had put Syracuse ahead 10-8 early in the fourth quarter.
Christmas got the Cavaliers within a goal with his third goal of the game and Yevoli tied the score at 10, converting in close after Trey Whitty forced a turnover.
Virginia scored three times in a 44-second span early in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse, which is appearing in its 20th straight Final Four, closed to within 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and it left the field at halftime tied at 6-6 as Josh Coffman set up two late goals by Springer. |
