    00-01 Stats: Dayton | A-10

  • Tuesday, Oct. 30
The Flyers have a pair of keys: Brooks Hall and Ramod Marshall. Oliver Purnell has solid talent, and has moved Hall back to his natural position of shooting guard. If Marshall continues to shoot it, he can be the Flyers' best guard, and Dayton can compete for the A-10 West.
    Outlook
The Flyers have won at least 21 games three times in the last four years, and ought to approach that number again with four starters back. The one missing guy was a good one, second-team all-league guard Tony Stanley -- the team's leading scorer at 15.9 points per game -- but 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Keith Waleskowski should be good for more production this season. And he produced plenty last season, averaging 11.3 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds en route to making the A-10 All-Rookie team.

Waleskowski also led the team in field-goal shooting (55.2 percent) and free-throw shooting (84.3) in one of the Flyers' best freshman performances since Roosevelt Chapman's 1981 season. Waleskowski is the anchor on this team, and the cast includes 6-6 junior wing Brooks Hall (9.2 points, 37.7 percent on 3-pointers), 5-10 senior point guard David Morris (6.9 points, 5.1 assists), 6-6 junior forward Nate Green (9.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and 6-7 senior forward Yuanta Holland (9.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg).

Holland, ineligible to play as a freshman, took advantage of a recent NCAA rule allowing players to earn back a fourth year of eligibility if they graduate in four years. The backcourt will have a solid fourth guard in 6-2 sophomore Ramod Marshall (8.6 ppg, 2.7 apg), though he's about the extent of the team's bench experience.

What we like: Five of the team's top six players are back, and Waleskowski is a rising star and rugged interior presence who can score from the line.

What we don't like: There's precious little depth on the front line, so it would be nice if 6-11 sophomore Sean Finn or 6-7, 260-pound freshman Jason Osborne was ready to contribute.

The bottom line: The Flyers ought to finish in the upper part of the Atlantic 10 and, with such a finish, have a shot at their second NCAA tournament appearance in three years.
