Former NBA coach Bob Hill's third season in the Bronx is hard to peg, given that three starters return from last season's 12-17 team, two transfers become eligible and exciting hometown freshman Adrian Walton joins the crowd. That sounds like the basis of a pretty good foundation, but then you have to consider the two starters who aren't back -- the team's backcourt last season, and its two leading scorers, Bevon Robin and Jason Harris. The transition could be fairly smooth if the 6-foot-2 Walton, who outscored Vince Carter 33-31 in a pickup game this past summer, and either Providence transfer Mark Jarrell-Wright or junior college transfer Smush Parker are ready to start. The frontcourt should be commendable. Sophomore Jeff McMillan (10 ppg, 7.8 rpg) returns after making the A-10 All-Rookie team, and is flanked by seniors Duke Freeman-McKamey (10.5 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Teremun Johnson (9.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg). Key returning role players include 6-6 senior forward Steve Canal (4.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and 6-8 sophomore wing Michael Haynes (5.6 ppg, 2.3 rpg). Along with settling on a backcourt, one of Hill's earliest tasks will be to mend the team's psyche, which surely took a jolt last season after the Rams lost 11 of their last 12 games after an 11-6 start. What we like: McMillan could be an A-10 star one day, and the infusion of talent this season is considerable. What we don't like: The loss of talent is considerable, too. Robin scored 1,793 points in his career, the second-most in school history, and Harris is the Rams' all-time leading 3-point shooter. The bottom line: Last year's team should have won more than 12 games. This year's team isn't as experienced, but it might get to that total, and even a bit beyond.
